Nokia 9 specs, release date, news and rumours
Will we be seeing the Nokia 9 PureView soon? A Nokia smartphone was long rumoured last year but never came to fruition and we thought it probably wouldn’t happen after we got the stunning Nokia 8 Sirocco.
We’ve also recently heard about the potential announcement of a Nokia 8 Pro, which is said to arrive with a penta-lens camera and Snapdragon 845 processor, but it sounds like the Nokia 9 will outdo it in almost every respect.
As a consequence, it may have a similar price to other high-end Android flagships. That would be an interesting market for Nokia to compete in considering the other handsets available in that price range. Some reports are suggesting iPhone XS-level pricing, though we consider that unlikely. Let’s check out what we know so far!
Nokia 9 release date, launch and name
- When will we see the Nokia 9?
- Will it be called Nokia 9 PureView?
The amount of noise around the Nokia 9 suggests that a release date will be sooner rather than later.
We thought the phone may be announced at the IFA 2018 electronics extravaganza at the tail end of August but it didn’t happen. And there was a subsequent event on the 4 October where the Nokia 9 again didn’t appear.
As for the name, we’re hearing it will be called the Nokia 9 PureView, as we first said back in August. The name harks back to Nokia’s past and will highlight the new phone’s reported penta-lens camera – more on that below.
Nokia 9 Pureview. That’s the actual marketing name of what will come soon from HMD Global. (I know the bought the rights to the Pureview moniker, but can now confirm it’ll be part of the device name.)

Nokia 9 design
- Penta lens design on rear
- Deep blue colour in several leaks
We’ve recently seen a render of the new phone – complete with the striking penta-lens setup via leaker Ben Geskin. This shows a notched design as well as seven holes in the rear casing. Five sensors, plus one flash and a final undefined hole, presumably for some kind of sensor.

However, this render isn’t actually that fantastical; ITHome has come by an image of a prototype TA-1094 model that looks very similar.
There’s been another leak of the rear design via Slashleaks through a picture originally posted on Baidu. Note there’s a slightly different penta lens design than the render above and also note the Android One logo.
Nokia 9 specs
- High-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 set to feature
- Under-display fingerprint scanner possible though we think unlikely
WinFuture has reported that a new Nokia phone is coming, and it’s the Nokia 9 with the codename of A1 Plus or A1 Plus Euro. This phone is internally referred to as the “A1 Plus” or “A1P” and will be similar to the Nokia 8 Sirocco (“A1N”). There may be a whopping 6GB of RAM on board and 128GB of storage. While not confirmed, the Nokia 9 may have a 5.7-inch P-OLED display by LG, compared to the likely 5.5-inch screen of the Nokia 8 Pro.
Recently, Nokia Power User obtained information that suggested the new Nokia phone would have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor (unlike the 835 used in the 8 Sirocco) and a best-in-class camera design.
Although we think it pie in the sky, that source also suggested it will have an in-display fingerprint scanner, something the likes of Apple and Samsung have been to be working on for some time.
We know that an under-display reader is something Samsung is looking to introduce with 2019’s Galaxy S10. Could it be like Vivo’s implementation seen here?
According to WinFuture, HMD has been able to hide the reader under the screen by using thinner glass cover and the aforementioned thin OLED display.
FIH Mobile is reportedly building the phone. FIH is a subsidiary of Foxconn, the Taiwanese corporation that builds a huge number of the smartphones we all use every day.
Nokia 9 camera
- Penta-lens design
- Dual cameras on the front
Nokia Power User says the Nokia 9 will be the “ultimate 2018 flagship” thanks to the best-in-class Zeiss penta-lens camera design as the leaks above reveal. This could offer as much as 52 megapixels and 5x optical zoom.
It is a circular lens module, said to come with five options for focal lengths, and looks a bit like the camera on the rear of the four-year-old Nokia Lumia 1020. Expect the Nokia 9 to have dual front-facing cameras, too.
